This new limited-edition 911 follows a similar concept, arriving 70 years after the first 356 America Roadster.
Max Hoffman was the first to import Porsches into the United States in the early 1950s, and his success helped persuade the German carmaker to create a less costly and lighter version of the 356 exclusively for American consumers. It was transformed into the roofless, stripped-down 1953 Porsche 356 America roadster with a 70-hp flat-four engine. Only 16 were ever made, but it inspired the classic 356 Speedster, and now, 70 years later, its U.S.-bred formula inspired the 2023 Porsche 911 GTS cabriolet America Edition.
The America roadster model made a comeback in 1992 and 1993 as part of the 964 generation. It was a Carrera 2 cabriolet with the bigger body, brakes, suspension, and 17-inch Porsche Cup wheels from the same-year Turbo. The ’23 911 GTS cabriolet America Edition, like the 964 America roadster, shares several components with the current 911 Turbo. It has the same 3.0-liter flat-six engine as the Carrera S, but with 30 more horsepower (473 total) and 30 more pound-feet of torque (420 total).
The America Edition, unlike the normal 2023 GTS, is exclusively available as a cabriolet with rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission. From the 356 through the 964, and now with the America Edition of the 992 generation, those three components have been at the heart of every America roadster. Porsche created 250 copies of the America-themed 964, but the firm claims it will only construct 115 of the 2023 model, with 100 going to the United States and the remaining 15 going to Canada. The new one should be simple to recognise due to its distinct look and specific interior fittings.
Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur created the 2023 911 America exclusively for them. It pays homage to the original with Azure Blue 356 paint, which is only available for the 2023 model year. Side decals in red and white with the word “America” inscribed on them complement the distinctive color. Its butt is emblazoned with “911 Carrera” in white and “GTS” in red. Porsche claims that this is the first time it has employed multicolored emblems. It’s also the first time the cabriolet’s windscreen structure has been coated in black, a stylistic choice designed to imitate the original’s slim pillars.
The tri-finished wheels, another first for Porsche, are arguably the most eye-catching feature of the new America Edition. While the normal GTS cabriolet may be equipped with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear RS Spyder-style wheels, they are only available in satin black. The rollers on the America Edition have white spokes with a silver face and a red pinstripe across the outer lip. It truly makes the rare automobile stand out. Porsche claims it intended the America Edition’s design to be halfway between inconspicuous and loud. And the corporation got it right.
Inside the automobile, a similar aesthetic idea is evident, with black leather serving as the base. Only the red-and-white contrast stitching on the top dash and door panels add a splash of color. The same stitching may be found on the center console armrest; “America” is also engraved in the leather. Finally, the doorsills include an illuminated plaque commemorating the 356 America roadster’s 70th anniversary.
An expanded interior option with even more red accents is available for an additional $7510. These include the 12-o’clock hash mark on the steering wheel, as well as red-and-white stitching on the interior of the steering wheel, floor mats, shift boot, and sections of the seats. The gear pattern on the shift knob, as well as the leather loops on the front seats that give access to the back seats, become red. In addition, the key fob is coloured to match the automobile and includes a stitched and embossed leather pocket.
This America Edition Porsche 911 Price will cost $186,370 when it arrives at U.S. dealers at the end of this year.
