by Dorothy M. Drewry

The familiar and unfamiliar name DATSUN used to be the brand name used by NISSAN for overseas markets, but after 1986, NISSAN decided to cancel the DATSUN brand, and all the cars in the domestic and overseas markets are sold under the NISSAN name. In 2013, the DATSUN brand returned to the car market, and now DATSUN is still part of the NISSAN Group, but its market target is aimed at consumers in emerging markets, so the brand specializes in creating cheaper cars. Recently, the brand has launched its first crossover in Indonesia, called Datsun Cross 2022, and its rather stylish appearance is sure to attract the attention of local consumers again.

This new compact crossover is actually based on the DATSUN Go-Cross Concept unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2015. Not only is the lower half of the car covered with black scratch-resistant plastic, but it also has a clearance of 200mm, symbolizing its crossover status. At the front, the new car has a hexagonal honeycomb water tank cover, coupled with eagle-eye projector headlights and prominent round fog lights, the overall shape is very stylish.

In addition, in order to add visual hierarchy, the front, rear, and side lower panels are decorated with matte metal, and the luggage rack is also covered with chrome. As for the interior, although it looks quite simple, the details are not sloppy, such as the air conditioning vents, the steering wheel, and the gearbox surroundings are covered with metal trim, and the side armrests are also covered with carbon fiber-like material. The new car interior does not look too plastic.

In addition, the new car is equipped with a 6.75-inch load system, three rows of seats, and a lot of storage space. In terms of power, the new car is powered by a 1.2-liter gasoline engine with an output of 78hp/10.6kgm. The transmission system can be selected between the conventional manual transmission and the X-Tronic variable speed system. In terms of active and passive safety equipment, there are dual front airbags, ABS anti-lock braking system, VDC dynamic stability system, TC traction control system, etc.

History of Datsun
In 1966, Nissan Motor Co. merged with its home country’s Prince Motor Co. and began its official road to producing sports cars. In order to open up the North American market, the Datsun 240Z, designed by Count Albrechtgratz, was born. 240Z subtly incorporated some of the Jaguar E style, and later added evocative round headlights and an angular front end. It was a big hit as soon as it was introduced. It became famous for its floating, dashing, dexterity without losing the thrill of suing for speed.

Meaning of the badge

Datsun has two meanings: first, it is the spelling of the names of the three founders, Kensuro Tada, Rokuro Aoyama and Akitaro Takeuchi; second, it has an ancient meaning of “fast as a rabbit” in Japanese. DATSON”, but the pronunciation of “SON” in English was unlucky in Japanese (it sounded like “loss”), so it was changed to “SUN”.

DATSUN, an important model in the history of Japanese automobiles, was founded in 1911 by Zenjirou Hashimoto, who developed the V-twin engine in 1914 and installed it in the DAT car. The first letter of the names of Kenjiro Aoyama, Rokuro Aoyama, and Akitaro Takeuchi is expressed in Chinese characters as “DAT”. Between 1935 and 1939, the production of Japan-made Datsun cars and Datsun cargo cars was overwhelmingly dominant in Japan’s domestic automobile production. After World War II, between 1955 and 1965, the Datsun Bluebird was renamed the Nissan Bluebird, and has been used ever since.
